MOTORCLASSICA AT THE MOVIES
THE KING OF COOL – A STEVE MCQUEEN RETROSPECTIVE presented by TAG Heuer
Steve McQueen’s box office appeal was always as its most powerful when he featured as the archtypical American anti-hero. From the desperate escaped con and bank robber of Sam Pekinpah’s The Getaway (1972) to the “Cooler King” Virgil Hilts in The Great Escape (1963), he could portray strength and vulnerability in equal measure, a trait which deservingly made him one of the biggest stars of the 1960s and 70s.
Like many great stars before and since him, his legend status has grown since his untimely death of a pleural mesothelioma-related heart attack in 1980. The Academy Award-nominated actor was the “King of Cool” and his life has spawned a legacy which has had particular resonance for car and motorcycle enthusiasts. It is this legacy we celebrate in our Steve McQueen Retrospective, presented by TAG Heuer, at this year’s Motorclassica @ the Movies.
